Learning at OLMC

Co-Curricular

The Co-Curricular program is an important part of life at OLMC. It provides an opportunity for students to develop their skills in areas of personal interest and it facilitates student connectedness, learning engagement and achievement beyond the classroom.

House System

Each student is allocated to a House when they enrol at the College. Our Houses are Carmel, Loreto, McAuley and Mercy. Numerous activities and competitions (such as swimming and athletics carnivals, arts festivals, debating) are held during the school year to foster and encourage teamwork and develop a sense of camaraderie.

Debating and Public Speaking

Participating in Debating increases confidence and the ability to work in a team effectively, it develops critical thinking skills, presentation and research skills and improves articulation, as well as assists students in developing a new view of the world around them.

Students from Years 7-10 have the opportunity to compete in the Debating Association of Victoria (DAV) and House debating competitions. Students can also participate in Plain English Speaking Competitions, Legacy Public Speaking Competitions, the United Nations Model Conference, British Parliamentary Competition and Frayne Speech Festival.

Performing Arts

Drama studies are offered through to VCE level and, as a result, there are opportunities for students to perform in small concerts, at assemblies and through lunchtime clubs.

OLMC and Marcellin College have combined resources to stage productions via the M2 Theatre Company. Each year a senior and junior musical production are staged. The productions are a highlight of the school calendar and in recent years have included Blood Brothers, Legally Blonde the Musical, Alice in Wonderland, School of Rock, Mary Poppins and Matilda The Musical.

Music

The music program at OLMC is extensive and continues to expand. Tuition is available for instruments including Clarinet, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Euphonium, Trombone, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Percussion, Piano Keyboard, Guitar (Electric, Acoustic, Bass). Voice tuition is also available. Students can have group or individual lessons. Private music and singing lessons attract additional charges and are billed separately.

Students come together to play in numerous bands and ensembles, including Orchestra, Concert Band, Choir, String Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Rock Band and other optional ensembles.

There are regular opportunities for these groups to perform, including the annual Performing Arts Celebration Concert held in the Nalleijerring Centre at the College. There is also an annual music camp for interested students which helps prepare students for the Celebration Concert.

Sport

OLMC Heidelberg is a member of Girls Sport Victoria (GSV). GSV is one the largest independent girls' schools sporting associations in Victoria. The Association provides participating schools and students with opportunities to compete in more than 20 sports throughout the year in weekly competitions, carnivals, tournaments and skills programs.

We are also a member of the Secondary Catholic Sporting Association (SCSA), allowing our students to compete in a variety of sports across several carnival days.

Sports offered include Aerobics, Athletics, AFL, AFL Umpiring, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Diving, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Triathlon and Volleyball.

Faith and Mission

Students have many and varied opportunities to take part in local community-based outreach initiatives, including Exodus Community Dinners and Bread Run, Camp Heide, Faith Animation, FIRE Carriers, Eco Justice, Feminist Collective, Seeds of Justice, and involvement in Masses and Liturgies.

A range of immersion programs that involve either interstate or overseas travel are available to small groups of senior students.

Clubs

In the Learning Commons and other areas across the College, students enjoy club memberships in areas of shared interest, such as photography, robotics, dance, anime and manga. There is also a Book Club and a Creative Writing club.
