Co-Curricular

The Co-Curricular program is an important part of life at OLMC. It provides an opportunity for students to develop their skills in areas of personal interest and it facilitates student connectedness, learning engagement and achievement beyond the classroom.

House System

Each student is allocated to a House when they enrol at the College. Our Houses are Carmel, Loreto, McAuley and Mercy. Numerous activities and competitions (swimming and athletics carnivals, arts festivals, debating, etc.) are held during the school year to foster and encourage teamwork and develop a sense of camaraderie.

Dance and Performance

Drama studies are offered through to VCE level and, as a result, there are opportunities for students to perform in small concerts, at assemblies and through lunchtime clubs.

OLMC and Marcellin College Bulleen have combined resources to stage productions via the M2 Theatre Company. Each year a senior and junior musical production are staged. The productions are a highlight of the school calendar and in recent years have included The Crucible, Hating Alison Ashley, Blood Brothers, Legally Blonde the Musical, Alice in Wonderland and School of Rock.

Music

The music program at OLMC is extensive and continues to expand. Instrumental tuition is available for Clarinet, Flute, Oboe, Trombone, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Euphonium, Tuba, Violin, Cello, Percussion, Piano Keyboard, Guitar (Electric, Acoustic, Bass). Voice tuition is also available. Students can have group or individual lessons. Private music and singing lessons attract additional charges and are billed separately.

Students come together to play in numerous bands and ensembles and three choirs. There are regular opportunities for these groups to perform, including the annual Performing Arts Celebration Concert held in the Nalleijerring Centre at the College. There is also an annual music camp for interested students which helps prepare students for the annual Celebration Concert.

Debating and Public Speaking

Participating in Debating increases confidence and the ability to work in a team effectively, it develops critical thinking skills, presentation and research skills and improves articulation, as well as assists students in developing a new view of the world around them.

Students from Years 7-10 have the opportunity to compete in the Debating Association of Victoria (DAV) and House debating competitions. Senior students also participate in the Northcote Lions Club Plain English Speaking, Legacy Public Speaking Competitions and the Frayne Speech Festival.

Clubs and Lunchtime Activities

The Nalleijerring Centre plays host to a wide range of programmed non-competitive lunchtime activities designed to engage students in physical activity. Examples include dance sessions, mat ball games, totem tennis, badminton and other activities as students request them.

In the Learning Commons and other areas across the College, students enjoy club memberships in areas of shared interest, such as chess, photography, robotics, dance, the Feminist Collective, anime and manga. There is also a Book Club and a Creative Writing club.
